Less street repair, more fun

There should be a lot less street and utility construction going on here in Sleepy Eye this summer. We have no large construction projects planned for this summer. There will be a few smaller projects going on here in town. As soon as the weather permits the bike trail around the lake will be getting crack repairs done and then a new fog seal will be put on it. We will be doing some smaller asphalt surface repairs throughout town, most of which will be a mill and overlay of the street surface.

Community Education News

The 2021-2022 school year will be ending in May. The year has nearly been normal with classes in person everyday unless there was inclement weather and most scheduled activities were held with a few things needing to be rescheduled. The weather has not been very conducive to the spring sports schedule during April so many meets and games will happen in May.

Master Gardener: Rhubarb

One of the most confusing plants in your garden is rhubarb. This vegetable is never eaten as a vegetable but is used as a fruit. Rhubarb is our ‘Citrus fruit’ of the north and is often called the pie plant. Those who have eaten the raw petioles fresh from the garden will not be surprised to learn that rhubarb is one of the most acidic of vegetables, its juice having a pH of 3.1 to 3.3.

SE Indians pick up 3 wins

After a week of bad weather, the Sleepy Eye Ball Park was the sight for a baseball game on Tuesday, April 19, when the Indians hosted the Wabasso Rabbits. Sleepy Eye 4 Wabasso 0 Jackson Huiras went 5 innings, giving up 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, and got 9 strikeouts.

Bad weather beating golf season

With high expectations for a good season, the Sleepy Eye United golf team hasn’t had many chances to show what they can do this spring. Most scheduled meets have been postponed due to the awful weather. The team last had a meet on April 11 when the boys defeated host GFW and Springfield; the girls were also successful that day with the other two teams not carding complete teams.
