The Miss Sleepy Eye organization celebrated the 75th Anniversary Miss Sleepy Eye Coronation Saturday night, March 12, at the Sleepy Eye Event Center. Katelyn Rutscher (daughter of Steve and Susan Rutscher) was crowned Miss Sleepy Eye 2022.
God opened his pearly gates to let in another angel. Laurie Brandl of New Ulm passed away at the young age of 59 at RAI Group Home in Luverne.
Annette E. Johnson, 99, of Sleepy Eye died on March 7, 2022, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye.
The COVID-19 pandemic further emphasized the need for skilled primary care in rural areas, like that of Sleepy Eye. Shortages of all kinds since the pandemic’s start—from hospital beds, masks and medical supplies to COVID-19 vaccines and monoclonal antibody therapies— made adaptability the name of the game for Sleepy Eye Medical Center and healthcare facilities, as a whole. At the forefront of every change and decision, however, remained SEMC’s commitment to patients and the community.
The Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club presented a check for $3,000 to Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Boating and Bobbers. This was money that was raised at the December Soup and Chili fundraiser. The Lady Knights ran into a hot Mayer Lutheran team in the battle for the Section 2A championship—and a trip to state—in a game played on Friday, March 11 at MSU-Mankato. Mayer Lutheran lead at the half, 28-19 and while the Knights came closer in the second half with 26 points to Mayer’s 30, it was not enough. Final score for State Tournament berth: Mayer Lutheran 58 St. Mary’s 45. “We had a hard time hitting shots in the first half and were down 9 points at the half,” said Coach Bruce Woitas. “The second half was more of the same—we did start to make shots but just couldn’t make the run we needed to close the gap.”

When I started my career, I lived in California. I grew up in Sacramento, a town of 1,000,000. I later moved to a small town up north, Redding. Redding was a town with a population of 100,000 where the shock of living in such a “small town” was difficult to adjust to. In these towns, I’ve worked around journalism for the past 25 years. I have always loved journalism. It is the reason I sought my first job in newspapers (accounting), just so I could be near the printed word in the hopes that maybe someday, my words could be on the page.

That list includes roofing jobs, windows, additions to property such as a garage or utility sheds, heating and air conditioning, gas water heaters, remodeling in your home, siding, etc. All zones in the city require a building permit.
