2022 Brown County Dairy Association Royalty crowned

On Saturday, March 12, at the Farm Show in New Ulm the Brown County Dairy Association royalty were crowned. Speech team preparing for Subsections

On Thursday, March 17, the River Valley Speech team hosted their annual Public Performance Night at Springfield Public School following the high school choir concert. This may have been the biggest turnout the speakers have had for a public performance night in many years. Many family members, friends, and educators from both Springfield and Sleepy Eye schools attended the event to support the speakers and listen to their words. Many spectators commented on how well prepared the speakers were and congratulated them and their coaches on their outstanding performances.

KNIGHTS HEADING TO STATE!

On Friday, March 18, the St. Mary’s Knights were successful in their quest for the Section 2A Championship— and a berth in the State Tournament—when they defeated Mt. Lake Area/Comfrey, 62-40, in Bresnan Arena at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Mayor Wayne Pelzel not only is Co-Chair of the 150th Anniversary Committee, he also volunteered to handle the Beard Growing Contest! This contest is a nod to the past—or maybe it is a “chin scratch” to the past. Beard growing contests were often a feature of old-time community celebrations that were held in honor of a town’s history.

SEHS Knowledge Bowl team going to State!

As things eased back to normal, the Sleepy Eye Public High School Knowledge Bowl team had big goals for the season. The team of juniors Brooke Arneson, Gunny Coulson, Adam Johnson, Alex Joramo, and senior Mason Sellner made it a priority to make it to the state tournament this year. Last year’s state appearance by this team (sans Sellner) was bittersweet as COVID-19 precautions altered the experience—tournament teams stayed in their own location and competed online.

Knights win Subsection Championship

The Knights boys basketball team set themselves up for a shot at the Section 2A Championship—and a trip to state—when they held on to their big first half lead over the Warriors of BOLD in the North Subsection Championship game Tuesday, March 15 at St. Peter High School. The final score was SESM 64 BOLD 57.
