Symbols, like words, have power

Welcome to my little but ever changing world. After graduating from seminary I went to Japan to serve, doing the same things as any Japanese pastor would do. At first I had a great deal of language and cultural training—and after they let me loose, I knew just enough Japanese to be, “dangerous.” However, little by little I was able to preach, teach, council, and do my pastor stuff just fine, I just didn’t look Japanese. Because I wasn’t Japanese, we all knew that I would only be welcomed into the Japanese circle to a certain point, I would always be known as ‘that’ foreigner. I worked hard on learning the language and respecting the culture and therefore I was respected and accepted.

Church to host education seminar

Grace Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye is hosting a free seminar on education at the Sleepy Eye Event Center on Thursday, March 10 at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Daniel Schierenbeck and Pastors Nathanael Mayhew and Mark Tiefel will be the presenters. The seminar is entitled “Evaluating Education - A Biblical Perspective on Critical Questions."

Torkelson to seek re-election

State Representative Paul Torkelson (R-Hanska) will seek re-election in the new House District 15B, which contains all or parts of Brown, Redwood, and Blue Earth counties, and the Lower Sioux Community. Torkelson has represented much of this area for the past seven terms, but a new redistricting map – required after every census to meet state population patterns – changed the boundaries.

Ag Trivia at the Pub set for Tuesday Night

Anyone with an interest in agriculture is invited to Ag Trivia Night at the Sleepy Eye Brewing Company on Tuesday, March 8 starting at 7 p.m. There is no charge – and complimentary pizza and a beverage of choice will be served. Featured activities include a friendly trivia competition (with great prizes), a panel of area ag-related entrepreneurs, and the opportunity to visit with fellow farmers and ag enthusiasts in a fun and relaxed setting.

40th annual New Ulm Hub Club Farm Show is March 11-12

It’s back! It may be a year late, but the 40th annual New Ulm Farm-City Hub Club Farm Show will take place Friday and Saturday, March 11 and 12 in the Civic Center on the Brown County Fairgrounds. The Farm Show committee and Hub Club members are excited to be able to hold the show. The club show was the “last show in town” before Covid shut things down in March 2020 and is the first event of its type to come back.

River Valley speakers do well at Redwood Falls tournament

On Saturday, Feb. 26, the River Valley speech team participated close to home in the Redwood Valley Cardinals tournament at Redwood Falls High School. This tournament featured around 200 participants from both Class A and AA schools. River Valley placed seventh in the team division out of twenty-one teams present. Several speakers received special recognition. Sarah Kottke led the team with a secondplace medal in drama. Earning third place medals were Kiera Lafferty in prose, Samantha Ibberson in poetry, and Taya Beyer in extemporaneous reading. Extemporaneous speaker, CJ Surprenant earned a fourthplace medal. Placing seventh in their categories and earning blue ribbons were Aubree Paplow in prose and Abigail Schwartz in original oratory. An eighth-place finish and red ribbon went to Brenna Pabst in prose.

CLARIFICATION ON CATARACT SURGERY PROCESS

Sleepy Eye Medical Center wishes to clarify the information in last week's article about cataract surgery being offered at SEMC. A referral from an eye doctor (not an ophthalmologist) is needed in order to schedule a cataract procedure with Dr. Ajay Shalwala. SEMC also wishes to acknowledge local optometrist, Dr. Jim Hutchins of Lifetime Eyecare Center, for the support, knowledge and collaboration he offered during the process of bringing Dr. Shalwala to SEMC.
