The crowning of the new Brown County Dairy Princesses will be held Saturday, March 12 at 2 p.m. at the Farm City Hub Club Farm Show in New Ulm. The Dairy Princess Program is sponsored by the dairy promotion check off, which helps to build demand and sales for dairy products.
The GFWC Qui Vive Club met on March 3 at Lillian Stimpert’s home for a program on Education and Libraries. Lillian gave a report on the book,”Out of the Blue,” by Scott Thoma. There were tragedies involved, and a number of oddities showing the power of a tornado. The book is available at the Dyckman Free Library.
Just a month ago, we had been in the midst of a COVID-19 Tsunami with both buildings experiencing high infection numbers. I am happy to report that things settled down here finally. Our numbers continued to go down and at this point we have no known cases in our buildings. Hopefully we are out of the woods and we do not have to pivot back again.
Once again, the River Valley speech team competed in two tournaments this past week. On Monday, Feb. 28, the junior high speakers competed in the RTR junior high invitational in Tyler. Aubree Paplow, prose, and Lily Kallevig, extemporaneous reading, both earned first place champion titles in their categories. In humorous interpretation, Kali Nachreiner was second place runner-up, while Paige Schwarzrock placed sixth overall. Third place finishes went to Taya Beyer in extemporaneous reading, Leo Hovland and Lily Pingeon in duo, and Ayvah Wendt in prose. Overall, River Valley scored 30 team points, earning them the first-place team trophy. The team from MCC was a close second place with 28 team points, and the speakers from Fulda earned third place with 21 team points.

The Thunderbirds of GFW defeated the Indians boys basketball team in Subsection playoffs Friday night, March 4, at Sleepy Eye High School gym, 50-35, ending the season for the Indians. Marcus Martinez - 12 points, 4 re bounds, 1 steal.
The Eagles boys hockey season came to an end with a loss in the Section 3A Championship game on Wednesday, March 2. Played at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in Mankato, the Eagles’ opponent Mankato East/Loyola won the game 6-0.
Thursday, March 10 Boys Basketball Section 2A North Subsection semifinals: Knights vs. New Ulm Cathedral, 6 p.m.
They might have set a new record at the Sleepy Eye City Council meeting Tuesday evening, March 8. With a short agenda the council dispatched with action in 17 minutes (according to this writer’s clock).
National FFA Week was celebrated by FFA members nationwide from February 18 to 26. The Sleepy Eye FFA Chapter was very active throughout FFA Week.
