40th annual Fishing Derby is largest ever

The Sleepy Eye Sportsmen's Club's 40th annual Fishing Derby on Sunday, Feb. 6 was a record breaker with 1,022 people registered for the fishing contest and probably 1,000 more people on the ice enjoying the fun. Despite a cold wind, everyone seemed to be happy with the day. Sportsmen's Club president Lynn Krenz said that everything went very well. "Now we start working on plans for next year!" he said Monday morning.

Eagles wrestlers take to the mat to promote suicide awareness and prevention

At their home meet against St. Peter on Tuesday, Jan. 25, the New Ulm Eagles wrestling team dedicated the meet to the promotion of mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The gym was packed full in support with many wearing green for mental health awareness or yellow for suicide prevention. Rolling Thunder youth wrestling started the night off, and it progressed to JV and then Varsity matches.

Students learn by experience

It’s long been an accepted thought in education that students have different learning styles. Some students react well to reading textbooks and listening to lectures to absorb the information a course covers. Some students have better results when they experience the lesson in a more hands-on way. Reinforcing classroom lessons with real experiences—learning by doing—is an excellent way to keep students interested in what they’re learning and invested in the outcome. Following are stories of how two local teachers have expanded classroom lessons to include the “real thing.”
