Springfield 102
St. Mary’s 72
The St. Mary’s boys basketball team ran into a bunch of trees at home Friday night when they were beaten soundly by Springfield 102-72.
The much taller Tigers gave the Knights fits inside. The problems were compiled by poor outside shooting by St. Marys.
St. Mary’s played well in the first half, only trailing 52-40. Springfield’s size wore them down in the final 18 minutes.
A 3-19 shooting performance from beyond the arc didn’t help matters.
“I thought our effort was very good,” said coach Tim Milliard. “In order for us to compete against a team like Springfield, we have to shoot a better percentage from the three-point line.”
The Knights did put four players in double digits scoring.
Jordan Osmonson led the way with 19 points.
Sean Mathiowetz finished with 14. Jon Milliard and Jordan Anderson scored 11 and 10 respectively.
Brett Ubl added eight rebounds.

Courtesy of this winter’s weather-related postponements, St. Mary’s and Springfield played again Monday night, this time on the Tigers home court.
The result was the same, a Springfield win, but this time around St. Mary’s was able to put up a much better fight, actually leading 43-38 at the half.
The Knights struggled with some layup against the home team’s big bodies while the Tigers were able to hit some big shots and free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
“Anytime you have a chance to win a game in the final minutes you walk away a little disappointed,” said coach Tim Milliard. “At the same time, we have to be pleased with almost beating the section favorite on their home court.”
MVL 90, St. Mary’s 73
A 15-0 run at the beginning of the second half was the difference in a 90-73 loss for St. Mary’s at MVL Tuesday night.
It was a one point contest at the half but the Knights slow start following the intermission cost them dearly.
“We hung in there for awhile but you could tell that last night’s game took a lot out of us,” said coach Tim Milliard. “We just didn’t have any energy on defense and we were inconsistent on offense.”
Kansas Adams led St. Mary’s in scoring with 17 points. Kyle Krzmarzick and Jon Milliard each added 11.
