Gene was born to Joseph A. and Rachel H. Schieffert in Sleepy Eye. Gene attended Sleepy Eye Public Schools and graduated in 1950. Gene attended Mankato State College until he became a very proud member of the United States Marine Corp. While serving in Korea, Gene was seriously injured resulting in his honorable discharge in 1955. Gene returned to Sleepy Eye and married Lois Peterson, his high school sweetheart and the love of his life on Aug. 25, 1955. They were happily married for more than 62 years. They were blessed with three children, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Gene began his successful farming career in 1958 with his father-in-law Russell Peterson. He taught his children the value of hard work and the importance of family. He taught his two sons how to be good farmers. His tradition and values are carried on by his family every day. In high school, Gene excelled in academics and in three sports. He also earned the honor of becoming an Eagle Scout which he was very proud of. During his adult-life, he served on many local boards: school board for Country School District 189 in Eden Township; Sleepy Eye Public Schools (1968-1977); the Farmer’s Elevator, President and Board Member; Brown County FSA, Brown County REA, Brown County Fair Board and Brown County Pork Producers. Gene was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church since 1955. His faith in God was the cornerstone of his life. He passed his beliefs on to those he loved. Gene’s only hobby throughout his life was his family. Family meant absolutely everything to Gene. The things he loved the most about life were first and foremost his wife Lois, his three kids and especially his six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He enjoyed every activity which involved his family. He loved sporting events and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings. Gene will be greatly missed by his family and friends along with anyone that knew him. His family will patiently wait for the day that they get to join Gene in Heaven.
