Kala R. Hannay 58, of Sleepy Eye, died on May 24, 2018 at her home. Service will be held at the St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Evan, on Sunday, June 3, at 4 p.m. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., at the church. The clergy will be Pastor Rebecca Krogstad. Interment will be at the Home Cemetery in Sleepy Eye at a later date. Arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. On line condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com.
Kala Renee Hannay was born on March 30, 1960 in Sleepy Eye, to Gilbert & Anna (Paulsen) Petermann. She grew up in Sleepy Eye and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School where she played the flute in band. She married John Hannay on Jan. 16, 1988 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan. Kala worked at J&R Schugel in New Ulm for over 23 years. She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, the Friendship Club and 4-H, and also a member of Toastmasters International where she met John. She was the church organist for 18 years, taught Sunday School and loved to teach others about the Lord. Kala enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking. She created and upheld many family traditions and every year she hosted a Christmas Cookie decorating event for all of her great nieces and nephews. Her gift was making memories that will last a lifetime. She was a second mother to her nieces and nephews and a grandma to their children. Kala loved to watch birds out her window with her beloved dog, Bella by her side. She fought a courageous battle with cancer for 15 years never questioning her faith, always keeping a positive attitude and never lost her wonderful sense of humor.She will be so dearly missed.
She is survived by her brothers: Richard "Pete" Peterman of Evan, John Peterman of Sleepy Eye; sister, Karen Beltz of Sleepy Eye; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and special friend, Pastor Becca Krogstad. Also survived by her loving dog, Bella. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John in 2016 and goddaughter, Jordan Jennings.
