Irene Houghtaling, 94, died Feb. 23, 2017 in Sacramento, Calif. of natural causes. Private internment to be at West Lawn Memorial Park, Racine Wis.
Irene was born on her parents’ farm in Stark Township near Sleepy Eye to Urban and Pearl Ludewig with six siblings, "Bud" Ludewig (deceased), George Ludewig (deceased), "Del" Seifert, "Lores" Gulden, "Vonnie" Berg and Marion Berg (deceased). In 1944, Irene moved to Camp Blanding, Fla. and married Paul Houghtaling. They had their daughter, Arla, in Minnesota and lived for many years in Fairfax where they built their first home. Eventually they settled in Racine, Wis. where Paul died in 1972. At age 64, Irene decided to move to Sacramento, Calif. with her daughter. There she devoted the next 30 years to her grandchildren, becoming an integral part of their daily lives. Irene was a life-long Catholic and an active parish member wherever she lived. The last parish she belonged to was Holy Family Catholic Church in Citrus Heights, Calif. She loved to golf, travel and was an especially talented gardener who could grow the most beautiful roses. She always enjoyed a good laugh, could set a beautiful table, cook a great meal, and bake an apple pie with an exquisite flakey crust. "Rene" loved her three sisters and had a special bond with "Lores" and her three nieces, Gail, Audrey and Cindy. Irene will be deeply missed as a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
She is survived by her only daughter, Arla McGuire (Dennis) 62, of Sacramento, Calif.; two grandchildren, Kristen (Dave) of Rancho Cordova, Calif. and Cat of Berkeley, Calif.; three sisters, Delrose Seifert, Delores Gulden and LaVerna Berg, all of New Ulm.
