Regular physical activity and healthy eating are key for a healthy weight. Lack of physical activity, combined with a poor diet, is the second leading cause of preventable death and disease in the US and a huge economic burden on the state. Regular physical activity and healthy eating is important for good health, and it’s especially important if you are trying to lose weight or stay at your current healthy weight.

If you are trying to lose weight, increasing your physical activity increases the number of calories your body uses for energy. When you burn calories through physical activity and reduce your caloric intake, it will result in a “calorie deficit” that results in weight loss. Most weight loss occurs because of the decrease in your calorie intake. Evidence does show that the only way to maintain any weight loss you have had, is to continue regular physical activity.

Choosing a balanced diet or eating plan is essential to weight loss and maintenance. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a healthy eating plan consists of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat free or low fat milk and milk products. Include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts. Stay away from saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium) and added sugar. Always stay within your daily calorie needs.
Remember, healthy eating is all about balance. You can enjoy your favorite high calorie, fat or added sugar foods. The key is eating them only once in a while, and to balance them out with the healthier foods and physical activity.
