The Triple A award from the Minnesota State High School League recognizes and honors high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the fine arts.
This year’s nominees include Ellen Mathiowetz and Kyle Krzmarzick of St. Mary’s and Rachel Schroeder and Michael Sprenger of Sleepy Eye High School.
Each of these student’s applications will be sent to a regional committee where a nominee for the state Triple A award will be selected for each region.
The state Triple A winners will be announced at a banquet which will be held in conjunction with the Boys’ State Basketball Tournament in March.
St. Mary’s student Ellen Mathiowetz has been a four year band student, volleyball and basketball player, as well as participating in track and field.
Ellen has played varsity level athletics in volleyball and basketball since her junior year and participated in varsity level track and field since her freshman year.
“Ellen has maintained an outstanding scholastic record and displays exceptional leadership qualities,” said Jerry Neubauer, St. Mary’s High School principal.
“What I’m most impressed with is how Ellen has demonstrated to our students what hard work and dedication can do,” he continued. “She has to put in many hours to get to where she is at today, and with her internal drive to achieve, I can see her doing great things in the future.”
Ellen says that she would be honored to be named at Triple A award winner.
“Winning this scholarship would be one of the most prestigious moments of my life this far,” Ellen said. “I would use the money to help with the cost of furthering my education in my quest to become a lawyer at the University of St. Thomas.”
Kyle Krzmarzick was involved in choir his sophomore and junior years while playing varsity level football and basketball since his freshman year and varsity level baseball since his sophomore year.
“I can say that Kyle is a born leader with deep personal convictions, empathy for his teammates and classmates and an understanding of personal sacrifice for the glory of all,” senior advisor Julie Neubauer said. “He is anxious to move forward with his life conviction, integrity and fortitude. A true leader.”
Kyle said that he tries his best at everything he does.
“I have worked hard at and excelled at the things I participated in,” he said.

Kyle will be attending the University of St. Thomas to study business followed by law school at the University of Minnesota.
Sleepy Eye High School student Rachel Schroeder is a four-year band student, has participated in One Act play performances her sophomore through senior years and has played volleyball, softball and been a cheerleader since her sophomore year, earning varsity level participation in those activities.
She was nominated by teacher and coach, Amber Franta.
“Whether it is the development of her character in the big school drama, or her throw on the softball field, Rachel is a very dedicated person,” she said. “She is a motivated young woman with numerous talents and considerable self-discipline.”
Rachel said that her accomplishments are through dedication and hard work.
“Possessing these skills has allowed me to step forward and be a positive role model, not only for the students in my school, but also to others in my community,” she said.
Rachel will be attending Southwest State Minnesota University to study Early Childhood Education and become a teacher.
Michael Sprenger is a four-year band student, One Act performer and involved in cross country, football, basketball and track and field. He was able to achieve varsity level in cross country and track and field during his eighth grade year and varsity basketball his junior year.
High school Communications teacher Kathy Oglesby nominated Michael for his wonderful personality and his deservingness of this award.
“He has proven to be trustworthy, highly innovative and above all, reliable and true to his word,” she said. “I appreciate his diligence and natural honesty and ethical approach to his school work.
Michael said his participation in activities has earned the respect and trust of his classmates which have enabled him to attain the positions of senior class president, National Honor Society president and FFA historian.
“These positions have taught me numerous lessons of leadership, hard work ethics and allowed me to interact with others in a positive manner,” Sprenger said.
Michael will be attending South Dakota State University studying Landscape Architecture.
