The Sleepy Eye Fire Department’s Fall Benefit Dance is a longtime tradition and the proceeds help provide equipment the firefighters need to carry out their fire protection and rescue mission.

Fire Chief Ron Zinniel said funds received last year, through the benefit and other generous donations, provided new helmets for the department’s 33 firefighters. “We are required by NFPA standards to replace the helmets periodically, because of helmet fatigue due to heat exposure and normal wear and tear,” he said. “The total cost for the new helmets came to approximately $11,000. The support of people in town and our rural fire district is very much appreciated for needs such as this.”

Zinniel said proceeds from this year’s benefit will go towards rescue equipment, including extrication tools. He said they also want to purchase hands-free communication equipment for the firefighters.

The Sleepy Eye Fire Department’s Fall Benefit Dance is Friday, Nov. 16 at the Sleepy Eye Event Center from 8 p.m. to midnight. The event features musical entertainment by Dain’s Dutchmen and The Heiderscheidt Band and a large silent auction.
