Sleepy Eye United's Head Coach Crystal Ibberson was named Coach of the Year by the Minnesota Coaches Association. Ibberson will be honored at the Sheraton West in Minneapolis Oct. 13.

Sleepy Eye United’s golf program has had large success in the past few seasons, most notably making the State Tournament for the third straight year. The most recent one of all was perhaps the sweetest.

Not only did the team clinch the right to be named co-champions of the 2018 State Tournament, but Ben Laffen also took home some hardware, taking home first place in the individual championship.

Now, Head Coach Crystal Ibberson was just recently awarded one of the most prestigious awards a coach could receive. Ibberson was selected by the Minnesota Coaches Association as Boys Golf Coach of the Year.

Laffen is glad Ibberson is getting the acknowledgement she deserves. “She was the coach our team needed,” Laffen said. “Crystal strongly encouraged us to get better and better everyday. She had a huge impact on what we achieved.” The recent graduated champion also said the bond the coach created developed the teams culture, specifically at the State Tournament.

“She was more confident in me than I was of myself, but I can’t thank her enough because all along she was trying to take my mind off the pressure and just to enjoy the moment.”

Teammate Logan Netzke agreed with Laffen. “She was really easy to talk to. If there were any moments where I lost my cool from hitting bad shots, she could always talk to me and help me cheer me up to get me back on track.”

Ibberson will be honored at a banquet at the Sheraton West in Minneapolis on Oct. 13.
