Sleepy Eye will have its traditional 4th of July celebration next week. The Sleepy Eye Eagles Club started the tradition of a community celebration on the 4th of July in 1974 and faithfully continued through 2015. Now, for their third annual event, the Knights of Columbus will have a food stand and entertainment by the Sleepy Eye Concertina Club during the day in Allison Park. The day will start with flag raising at 11 a.m.

The KCs will be serving burgers, hot dogs, kraut, beans, chips and beverages from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. As has long been the tradition, St. Mary’s School music and athletic departments will have a pie stand in the park also—they’ll set up in the morning and serve pie and desserts until, “they are all gone,” probably by mid-afternoon.

Thanks to the City of Sleepy Eye, the fireworks show will continue as it has for the past 43 years. The Sleepy Eye Fire Department will shoot the show over Sleepy Eye Lake at dusk — about 10 p.m. They’ll set up on either the south or north shore, depending on wind conditions.

With the holiday smack in the middle of the week, many people will likely be around town to enjoy their one day off work. Here’s to a great turnout at the park during the day and along the lakeshore at night!
