James Hagen advances to State in 100 and 200 wheelchair dashes.

The Sleepy Eye Unified track team had five athletes qualify for the Section 2A meet, held on Saturday, June 2 at Mankato West High School. It should not have been a surprise, after many rainy track meets this year, that the team left Sleepy Eye early Saturday morning in the cool drizzle.

Head Coach John Cselovszki said the track team had results to be proud of—during the season and at the section meet.

“Despite the horrible weather, we had a great season and many of our athletes ended up with personal bests. At the section meet, Abby ran a personal best in the mile and both McKenzie and Zach achieved their season best, as well,” he said.

“Our wheelchair athlete, James Hagen, advances to the state meet in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes,” Cselovszki said. “He is only a seventh grader and smaller than his competition, but he works very hard to get stronger and faster.”

Results for the SEU individuals at the Section 2A meet:

•James Hagen, wheelchair division, second in the 100 meter dash with 52.54 and in the 200 meter dash at 1:49.80, both personal records.

•Zach Schumacher ran the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.22 (PR) in the prelims, but did not advance to the finals.

•Seventh grader, Sophie Gustafson, was the youngest competitor in her events—she ran the 100 meter hurdles at 19.45, and the 300 meter hurdles at 55.23.

•Abigail Hagen was 12th in the 1600 meter run at 5:39.45 (PR).

•McKenzie Cselovszki was 10th in shot put with 33-10.00 (PR).

Seniors, Schumacher and Cselovszki, were pleased to end their high school track careers achieving personal records in their events.

James Hagen will compete in the state track meet, June 8 and 9 at Hamline University in St. Paul.
