Mayor Wayne Pelzel opened the March 13 City Council meeting with a moment of silent reflection on the recent passing of former Mayor Jim Broich.

First on the agenda was a public hearing on the proposed renovation of city hall—specifically to renovate the former liquor store for use as the police station. City Manager Mark Kober explained the hearing is a requirement for application to U.S.D.A. grant and financing programs. Kober warned that it looks like the city won’t qualify for the U.S.D.A. programs, because “we have too much money.” Kober was referring to unrestricted cash funds the city has on hand. Kober said the project would not be ready for bidding until summer.

Dave Theneman, speaking on behalf of the Sportsmen’s Boating and Bobbers group, asked the council for a $5,000 contribution for the new pontoon boat. He explained the former Let’s Go Fishing group decided to discontinue as such, due to financial problems with the state organization. “We think Let’s Go Fishing is a wonderful program, in fact we plan to continue using the same rules and procedures,” said Theneman. Kober told the council there is $3,500 in the budget for the boating group, and enough additional undesignated community contribution funds to make the $5,000 donation doable. The council approved the donation. Theneman said they’d collected $15,000 in donations (before the city’s contribution) towards the $31,500 cost of the pontoon boat.

Kober told the council of a proposal to have rental kayaks and paddle boards at the lake in summer. He said the funds from the new Barbecue Contest during Corn Days was earmarked to help with the project. Chamber Director Christina Andres and Parks Director Steve Lingen will bring total cost information to the April meeting.

Kober said the city would be signing with a new client in the Snow Farm on Friday and looks forward to making the official announcement.
