With the regular season behind them, it was all on the line for the Eagles girls hockey team as they hit the road for the Section 2A semi-finals against the Hutchinson Tigers on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

Eagles 4

Tigers 1

The two big losses the Eagles took in the regular season were to Hutchinson and Delano, and both teams now had the potential of standing in their way on the path to the Section Championship and State. Coach Kristin Faber has stated over and over again that she is looking foreward to a chance to reface their rivals saying, “I’d like a chance to see what the girls can do now, after a season of experience, against those teams.”

The Tigers previously won on a 2-0 shutout, so it was anyone’s game. After a very physical first period, the Tigers took the lead with one goal in the second period.

New Ulm was taking more shots on goal than Hutch, but things weren’t looking good, with Tigers goalie Emma Barrick-Benson stopping every shot. Then in the third period it happened.

Molly Scheid managed to tie up the game, giving the Eagles a spark. Dani Weiss and Ali Beltz did what they do best and rocked out three goals on Barrick-Benson. Weiss hit the first goal on a power play, as an interference penalty cost the Tigers a skater. The Tigers got desperate and pulled their goalie for the extra man. That move would be their undoing, as Beltz moved in on the empty net, and with a pass from Ally Steffensmeier, got the goal. Weiss then scored again, with seconds on the clock, unassisted.

With this wi, the Eagles girls move on to face their other big nemesis, Delano, for the Section 2A Championship at Gustavus Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
