Wabasso 82

St. Mary’s 71

The Rabbits hit a three to get things started and set the pace for the evening, running away with the lead. “We get down 16-2 early and fought hard to come back,” said Coach Bruce Woitas.

Before the clock ran out on the half, the Knights had managed to fight their way to a seven-point lead, 37-30.

The second half got away from the Knights however, with the Rabbits hitting seven treys and knocking down all but one of their free throws. “We played hard,” Woitas said. “But we used a lot of energy to come back into the game. In the second half, Wabasso shot well no matter what we did.”

Madison Mathiowetz led with 25 points, 13 rebounds and two assists. Mallory Helget scored 15.

St. Mary’s 57

Sibley East 53

The Knights recovered from the loss at Wabasso to come home and fight the Sibley East Wolverines for their home fans.

“A close game throughout,” Woitas said. “When someone took the lead, the other team would fight back, and it was like that all night.”

The first half was a close contest, with the lead grabbed by Sydney Windschitl, who hit a field goal for a one-point lead 26-25.

Mathiowetz hit two treys in the second half; Cassie Hienrichs and Kelsie Kosak each got one as well. This game came down to free throws in the final seconds. Mathiowetz hit a free throw and then came back to sink a layup to grab the lead at 54-53. Heinrichs got to the free throw line with 56 seconds on the board and sank one for 55. The clock was still counting down and the Wolverines took possession of the ball. Heinrichs got the rebound on a failed shot and sent it to Hansen. Hansen ran it down for a shot, but got fouled on the way. With 8.02 seconds on the clock, Hansen hit both of her free throws, taking any chance at overtime away from the Wolverines.
