St. Mary’s kicked off the tournament against the Murray County Central Rebels on Friday. The Rebels had height and experience on their side—the 2017 team is made up entirely of seniors and juniors. They brought the full court press with them and kept the Knights in recovery mode the entire game, in spite of some effective passing on the part of St. Mary’s. “I thought for a first game we played pretty well,” said Coach Tim Milliard. “MCC pressed and trapped us the entire game and overall I thought we handled that effectively.” St. Mary’s gave up fewer fouls than MCC in the game. Blake Steffensmeier led the Knights with eight points. Carter Currans, Nick Labat and Collin Ludewig contributed six points each.

The Sleepy Eye Indians also had a rough opening game, against the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers. The Indians were facing a team with a high level of experience and more height.

The Panthers didn’t manage a break away until the second half, when they put up a 10-point gap and held it.
