The New Ulm Eagles girls hockey team faced down their giants early this season, squaring off on home ice against the Delano Rockford Tigers Saturday, Nov. 18.

Delano/Rockford 4

New Ulm 3

Last year the Eagles squared off against the Tigers in the section semifinals and lost 7-0. “I told them at practice not to think of them as a team that’s seven goals better then us,” said Coach Kristin Faber.

The Eagles came out of the gate moving fast and passing well, but Delano/Rockford pulled ahead by two in the first period, thanks to senior center Jamie Byrne. Byrne was one of three players last year to get goals past Eagles goalie (then Karlie Ries) and she looked to do the same again this year.

A tripping penalty cost the Tigers in the first period, with Ashtyn Wiltscheck scoring on the power play, assisted by Ali Beltz and Dani Weiss.

The Tigers held the lead in the second period and scored another goal for a 3-1 lead.
