The Food for Kidz packaging event on Sunday, Nov. 12, will likely be the occasion of Sleepy Eye’s millionth Food for Kidz meal being packaged.

Organizer Rick Mages is especially excited for this fall’s Food for Kidz packaging event. Set for Sunday, Nov. 12 at the new Sleepy Eye Event Center, Mages expects that Sleepy Eye’s millionth Food for Kidz meal will be packaged then.

Each fall since 2004, volunteers have gathered to pack meals, generally packaging 70,000 or more each year. Mages said in this, its 14th year, Sleepy Eye is only 66,000 meals from the one million meal milestone mark!

“We need the community’s support for this ambitious goal,” said Mages. “Come as a family—parents, grandparents and children. Encourage the kids to bring along a buddy.”

Mages said there are two shifts: 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 12:45 to 3 p.m. Event set up and take down will be done by students: St. Mary’s and Sleepy Eye High School’s student councils and honor societies and Sleepy Eye and area church youth groups.

“Last year, 1,500 meals stayed in our Brown County area for distributing. We also made cinnamon and oatmeal, plus rice and bean packages,” said Mages. “I also believe we are teaching both young and old alike to be compassionate toward others in need.”

The regular Food for Kidz packages contain a nutritious meal of rice, soy, vitamins and vegetables that are fed to hungry children around the world.

Food for Kidz is successful not only due to the many volunteers that pack the meals. Monetary donations are also a vital part of the effort. Mages said 100 percent of all donations fund the packaging of the food ingredients in a heat-sealed packet; all other costs are fully donated by other sources.

Donations in envelopes marked “Food for Kidz” can be placed in church collection baskets or dropped off at a local school.
