Open House at the Sleepy Eye Event Center this Saturday evening!

Just a year ago, on Oct. 14, 2016 to be exact, the City of Sleepy Eye awarded the first bid package for the new event center. Twelve days later the ceremonial groundbreaking was held and the community has watched the facility go up since then.

Now it is time to celebrate the city’s achievement—a wonderful replacement for the Orchid Inn, which served the community so well, for so many years.

This Saturday, Oct. 21, the community is invited to come out and enjoy the almost brand new Sleepy Eye Event Center. Almost brand new—because the space has already been host to six weddings in just under eight weeks.

Saturday’s open house, from 7 to 11 p.m. will feature music by local favorites, Heide and the Good Ole Boys, 7 to 9 p.m. and Sandra Lee and the Velvets, 9 to 11. There will be free refreshments along with a cash bar.

Event Center Manager, Lisa Steffl, said the last two plus months have been a whirlwind of activity. She admitted to putting in a lot of hours, with not much time off. “I wanted to get off on the right track,” said Steffl. “And I couldn’t have done it without the help of Chris Fischer. She’s also put in a lot of time as we’ve prepared for weddings and meetings.”

In addition to the six weddings, there have been six business meetings—a couple of which were two day events, and the community blood drive, held at the Sleepy Eye Event Center. Plus, Steffl has been busy meeting with brides and grooms as they book their receptions.

“We are booked with weddings through November,” said Steffl. “And have many more wedding reservations for the future—three for 2019 already. We have a couple meetings scheduled in December and several holiday parties in January.”

Steffl said that business meeting bookings just “pop up,” generally not needing a long planning period. “MnDOT just booked space, for a public meeting on Nov. 9, to go over plans for the 2018 Highway 14 project.”
