The Knights and the Indians played it close in the first set, until St. Mary’s broke ahead by five and held the lead until 25-15. Serving errors cost the Indians several shots at the lead early in the first set.
In the second set, the Indians took the initiative, pulling ahead 9-4. The Knights dug deep and pushed back—gaining the upper hand and the win. Dani Weiss and Kelsie Kosak led the Knights defense with five digs each.
After the second set there was a break for a serving competition and both teams got time for a locker talk. The Indians came into set three like a different team and took the Knights on a run. The scoring went back and forth for the first nine points with each team scoring one. With Mya Ibberson and Madi Heiderscheidt on kills the Indians pushed past the Knights taking the third set, 25-13.
The fourth set was the longest of the night with both teams on their A-game. The Indians found their rhythm and the Knights had to work hard to keep the game close. One of the final plays of the night involved a volley that lasted for over 17 hits back and forth before the Knights took the point. The fight to the finish saw the game tie at 20-20 before the Knights managed to pull ahead by three for the win.
The Indians were led by Ibberson who finished with 13 kills, nine blocks and nine digs and Heiderscheidt with seven kills and 27 digs. Madi Krueger added 26 digs and 4 aces.
For the Knights, Jody Hansen got three kills, 29 set assists and 15 digs. Ali Beltz got 12 kills and 13 digs. Weiss got 13 digs and Kosak completed 16 digs.
The Knights will play in Winthrop against GFW on Thursday, Sept. 28.
