This year is filled with so much promise! Our young athletes are really stepping up, across the board. Every coach I’ve talked to has had good things to say about the contenders that have come out this year—athletes that came back ready to compete.
Indian Landon Strong managed a touchdown on against a football team favored at state. Andrick Sanchez, over at St. Mary’s, rushed 100 yards in his first senior game and the whole team won a resounding victory in their first nine-man game. Coach Brent Kucera can’t say enough good things about his seniors this year.
Girls cross country looks stacked with some strong runners. The team as a whole finished in first place at their first meet. The boys team maybe didn’t get the results they wanted, but as coach DeMaris was saying, “It’s about finding out where everyone is and what we can work on.”
Now let’s talk about volleyball. Wow Tuesday night’s game was intense! It was my first chance to see the Indians in action this year and I have to say I’m impressed. They came back a stronger and more committed team this year. You wouldn’t know Madi Heiderscheidt didn’t play last year by the way she attacked at the net. The girls are definitely a different team this year and they actually had the Knights on the ropes for a majority of the game, which is something I haven’t seen happen to them yet this season.
The Knights were maybe a little more frustrated than they were used to, but to coach Jen Walter’s benefit, one of the things she does well is refocus her team. St. Mary’s managed to recover and pull off the win. What made that such a great game is neither team let the scoreboard determine their commitment or intensity. Even when they were down by seven points the Knights fought their way back. I see good things from both teams this season.
Let’s keep the bleachers full this season!
