With the retirement of head football coach Mark Esch, Mankato West High School needed a new head coach. They chose Sleepy Eye’s own J.J. Helget, a graduate of St. Mary’s, for the position.

Helget graduated from St. Mary’s in 2002 and played football during his time there. “I loved football from an early age. I definitely feel that my high school experience certainly made me interested in coaching,” Helget said. “I was intrigued by the basic concepts of the game and that continued throughout college, until I decided to reach out to Mankato area football coaches for a chance to volunteer, and see what coaching was all about.”

After high school, Helget studied to become a high school teacher at Minnesota State University, Mankato. While in school, Helget volunteered at Mankato West on the football staff.
