The Sleepy Eye YES! Team gathered at the Sleepy Eye Golf Course on June 6 to receive two awards of recognition. Michelle Issacson, regional YES! Coordinator, presented the team with the 2016-17 Regional Award for Project Impact and the 2016-17 Regional Award for Community Leadership & Education. After receiving the awards, the team kicked off an action project that aims to maintain habitats for monarch butterflies and other pollinators in long grass areas near the golf course. Also attending to offer congratulations were Sleepy Eye city officials Mayor Wayne Pelzel, Public Works Director Bob Elston, EDA Coordinator Kurk Kramer and Bob Rubey, who informed the team of the decline in monarch populations and suggested they take advantage of the milkweed growing around the golf course to help maintain pollinator habitats.
