MVL hosted a double header and took both games—against a St. Mary’s team favored to appear at sections this year.

MVL’s Nick Fischer pitched a no hitter, making him a real threat to St. Mary’s for the rest of the season. Nic Helget took the loss on the mound, pitching five innings. He was charged with four hits, five runs, five walks and struck out two. “Nic pitched well for us, we just didn’t give him any support,” said coach Bruce Woitas.

In the second inning the Chargers took the lead with one run then sealed the Knight’s fate with four more in the sixth. Errors and bunts were the name of the game in game one. The Knights struggled against the Chargers repeated bunts and then made errors while passing the ball in the infield.

The Knights seemed shaken by the loss of game one and continued to struggle in the box. Nick Strate managed to double, but never saw home plate. Helget also made a key move, hitting a triple, but the Knights were not able to capitalize on the setup. Alex Woitas took to the mound in game two, but lost allowing five hits and two runs while striking out five.

In the top of the sixth MVL took the game away from St. Mary’s with two runs and the game was over.

Springfield 7

The Knights recovered from Monday’s games with a strong batting game at Springfield on Tuesday. In the top of the first inning Nathan Schroepfer, Woitas, Strate, Kyle Windschitl, Helget, Sean Salfer and Logan Zuhlsdorf all made it home.

“Springfield’s starter had control problems and that led to the big inning,” said coach Woitas.

Springfield got three runs in the bottom of the first. St. Mary’s came back in the second with Strate, Windschitl and Helget all scoring runs. Springfield managed to score in the second and third, but it wasn’t enough to undo the massive lead St. Mary’s built.

Schroepfer ran home in the fifth and again in the seventh. Windschitl followed and gave the Knights their final run.

The Knights travel to Hector to play BLHS on Thursday, April 20 at 5 p.m.
