SEPS school board approves Taher Inc. for food service

In a lengthy discussion at the Sleepy Eye Public School Board regular meeting held Wednesday, May 9, the board ultimately decided to go with Taher, Inc., as the food service provider for the district for the 2012-13 school year.

Morning Jolt: Haunted home for seniors?

An abandoned hospital in Los Angeles that is believed by many to be haunted will be transformed into a senior home. The Linda Vista Community Hospital – which is so creepy that it is often used in movies – has been the site of numerous ghost reportings over the years. Amcal Multi-Housing Inc. says the stories are just urban legends and will change the facility to senior housing in the near future.

Blood drive collects 142 units of blood on Tuesday

A sunny, warm day didn’t sway those who donate blood. With a steady flow of people donating, the Red Cross was able to collect a total of 142 units of blood.

May events cancelled, Old Log Theatre trip set for June 21

The Wanda Gag grant has found an instructor, Marilyn Lieske, for Pick a Path – Make a Game! The class will be held June 4-7, 9:30-10:45 a.m., for ages 6-12 at Sleepy Eye High School – Room 134. Youth will design, construct and decorate a board game and then make a box to store it in. The games will be displayed at the Dyckman Free Library for one week following class. Materials are provided.

City seeks payment from farmer for bike path clean up

The City of Sleepy Eye intends to pursue billing for the clean up of debris left on the Sleepy Eye Lake Trail by a local farmer who farms the land surrounding a portion of the trail.

Attorney’s argue for dismissal in Reinarts vs. Braulick SBM case

Brown County District Court Judge Greg Anderson took under advisement May 11, a request made by attorneys representing Laurie Braulick and Alan Roeser, representatives of Investment & Insurance Services of New Ulm, to dismiss the case brought against them  in February by the Farrish Johnson Law Office of Mankato, on behalf of Lester Reinarts of Sleepy Eye.
 

LaCourse sentenced in charges of financial exploitation case

Ann Marie LaCourse, 48, of Sleepy Eye, appeared in court Friday, May 11, for sentencing after she pled guilty in March to financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult.

Morning Jolt: Family saves kitten tossed out of car

A Michigan couple were driving on the freeway in Dearborn, Mich., when they saw a kitten tossed from a speeding car. Ronald Haas and Niel Rishoi quickly stopped and picked up the kitten, who surprisingly was OK other than being “scared and panicked.” The couple then adopted her and named her Dora.

SE pride initiative going strong, students responding
