The Dyckman Free Library is proud to present local historian Gary Wiltscheck on Thursday, September 22. Gary, author of the new book, “The Leavenworth Rescue Expedition Revisited,” will speak about his research for the book and the dramatic events of August 18 and 19 during the U.S. Dakota War.
Many vendors set up booths to display their wares on Friday at the Senior Citizen's Arts and Crafts Fair at the Community Center.
The fall session of Community Education offerings were printed in the Brown County Reminder on Sept. 5, as well as posted on the school website in the Community Education department. Check it out for a lot of opportunities available starting in September and going through December. We have a list of other things to offer, but thought they were better suited for the winter-spring so hopefully we will be able to include them at that time.

What is most rewarding about teaching music?
Hanson said what he finds most rewarding about teaching music is watching the kids who didn’t love music before his class, blossom into upcoming musicians.
“Seeing learning happen and watching kids discover they have a passion about music that they didn’t realize before,” Hanson said.

his unique art. Ask questions of the artist and watch them work. If you are interested in finding

on Father's day at the store on Sunday afternoon from 1 to 4 pm, June 19.

Become a "volunteer soldier" at Fort Ridgely on June 18, 2011. Civil War era re-enactors will be at the site to train recruits for infantry and artillery militia.
Prairie Dance Alliance of Southwestern Minnesota will be holding its 19th
annual Summer Dance Camp July 17-22, 2011 at Southwest Minnesota State University. This camp is
open to dancers ages 7-21 and will introduce strong technical instruction in various dance styles
including Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Lyrical, and Tap, along with opportunities for instruction in Musical

This is rural American Traditional Music, music played in homes, at dances and for earlier entertainments. Along with a repertoire including dance tunes, ballads, cowboy songs, humorous and sentimental numbers, they spice the show with stories, history and folklore.
Josef Haas was born June 6, 1881, in the village of Trohatin, Kreispilsen, Bohemia. The village was located in the Bohmer-Wald (the Bohemian Forest), now Drahotin, Czechoslovakia.
Sleepy Eye Community Theatre has been busy providing theatrical and musical productions to the area for the past 19 years. Local talent, volunteers and generous donors have supported and made these endeavors possible. Proud of its history but also looking to treat audiences with something new, SECT is excited to embark on a brand new adventure this July! The SECT Board of Directors have spent the past few months researching new, creative ideas and have decided to switch gears a little bit for this summer and bring the entertainment to Sleepy Eye. Schmidt Foundation Grants $30,000 to Area Libraries to Introduce Digital Materials Service
Earlier this month, the Schmidt Foundation generously granted $30,000 to the Traverse des Sioux Library System for the purpose of introducing Overdrive, Inc.’s downloadable digital materials service to all area public libraries.

Sleepy Eye High School has named George Hirschboeck and Cassie Cselovszki as recipients of the Triple ‘A’ award this year.
Robert J. Lang, one of the world’s leading masters of origami, who is serving as the 2010-2011 Rydell Professor at Gustavus Adolphus College, will do public foldings of his work on Monday, January 24 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., and Wednesday, January 26 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., in the lower level of the Jackson Campus Center of Gustavus Adolphus College, across from the Book Mark. All are welcome to drop by and watch Lang at work.
As part of its effort to invest in economic growth within the region, Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) is offering $100,000 in incentive grants. Grants up to $20,000 are available to support collaborative projects or programs in emerging business and workforce areas. Applications for this grant round are due February 15, 2011, with awards announced April 1, 2011.
