As of Tuesday evening, the Sleepy Eye City Council banned electronic cigarette use in indoor public places in Sleepy Eye — every place that smoking is banned.

The council voted unanimously on an ordinance that bans smoking of e-cigarettes in public places and coincides with the Minnesota Clean Air act which prohibits smoking indoors.

In addition, the ordinance also limits new retail sale of the device and accessories for e-cigarettes.

E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that resemble tobacco cigarettes but deliver a nicotine hit by inhaling vapor rather than smoke. Some are nicotine-free. They come in a variety of flavors, ranging from gummy bears to cotton candy to Mt. Dew. Some deliver lobelia, an herb that has similar properties to nicotine.
