  • If you haven’t, no worries. There are plenty of new sports popping up around the World that are becoming more and more popular and I wanted to share a couple of them with you.

First off, is footgolf. Footgolf is a combination of golf and soccer, where players kick a soccer ball into a cup on a golf course in as few shots as possible. It’s a fairly new sport-the Federation for International FootGolf was created in 2012. It’s a rapidly growing sport, with many soccer players saying it’s not only fun but it’s a great way to improve accuracy on their kicks. I haven’t played it yet, but I assume you have to have the right amount of strength and finesse to kick the ball through different terrain.

It would be pretty cool to have a footgolf course here in town. All it takes is a hole that is 21 inches in diameter and a golf course that’s willing to have people kick soccer balls on the holes. If you’re reading this, Brian Hertling, maybe you should consider it!

Next up, is CrossFit. CrossFit has been around since 2000, but the “CrossFit Games” competition was started in 2007. CrossFit is basically a sporting event in which athletes are tested on a variety of elements such as weightlifting, gymnastics, and body exercises. Basically, it’s the sport for all you gym freaks out there. Recently, a CrossFit competition was held in New Ulm where about 100 athletes participated. From jumping rope to bench pressing and long distance running, CrossFit is the ultimate challenge.

There are a lot of other sports that have been around a while but have recently seen a spike in popularity. One of my favorite sports to play is ultimate frisbee, which is becoming so popular that some high schools and colleges have it as an official school sport now. It would be awesome to see a local ultimate team form around here some day. Some of the other growing sports are pickleball, lacrosse, paintball, and mixed martial arts.
