  • The River Valley Wildcats tennis team defeated Worthington 6-1 on the road on Aug. 19 to kick off the fall sports season.

The only loss for the Wildcats was at No. 1 singles, in which junior Kalyn Haas fell 0-6 in her first set and warmed up in her second set, winning five games but lost 5-7. Meanwhile, junior Lauren Laffen dominated her opponent in a 6-0, 6-1 match at No. 2 singles and junior Alyssa Rubey won the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-3. In doubles, the No. 1 team of junior Natalie Stevens and senior Erika Ries defeated their opponents by a 5-2 withdraw.

It was a nice win for the Wildcats, as they lost to Worthington 2-5 in last year’s meet. Despite the win, Laffen said there are harder teams to prepare for.

“It was great to get out there and start playing competitively,” Laffen said. "It was a good first meet, but there is a definitely room for improvement. We need to continue to get better if we want to compete with the best teams in our section."

River Valley will travel to Marshall on Thursday and New Ulm on Friday. The first home meet will be on Aug. 25 where the Wildcats will host St. James.
