The Stark amateur baseball team defeated Searles on Aug. 8 at home in the final game of the season.
The Longhorns were quick to the bats as a double from Craig Fischer was followed by a single RBI from Dusty Mangen to take a 1-0 lead in the first. After a single from Nathan Kral, Brady Hansen hit a RBI single of his own to bring in Mangen to take a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, singles from Landon Zinniel and Elliot Braun loaded the bases to give Stark an opportunity to pull away. However, only one runner was able to score, after Fischer recorded another RBI single. The Longhorns left three on in the inning after a ground out from Mangen ended their chances.
Meanwhile, the Grizzlies were held back defensively as draftee pitcher Alan Woitas led Stark on the mound with a solid performance. In the eighth however, Searles recorded a RBI single to be put on the board.
In the top of the eighth, the Longhorns made it 4-1 after Fischer hit a triple and Mangen hit a sacrifice RBI. However, the Grizzlies responded in the inning with a double and a RBI single to make it 4-2. Another single RBI, this time from Zach Fischer, brought the score to 4-3. Despite the opportunity to tie the game, Stark made a clutch double-play on the field to end the inning and held on to win.
The Longhorns end their season with a final record of 15-10 while Searles went 9-16. Meanwhile, the State Class C Amateur Baseball Tournament will begin this weekend in Belle Plaine and Jordan. Lamberton will first take on Green Isle on Aug. 16, while Hanska will take on Sobieski on Aug. 17, both in Belle Plaine. The New Ulm Brewers, who swept their opponents in the Region 2C playoffs, will begin the state tournament against the winner of Loretto and St. Benedict on Aug. 22 in Jordan.
