  • The Sleepy Eye VFW team went 1-1 on July 25 at the District 2 VFW baseball tournament, which wasn’t enough to advance.
     
    Sleepy Eye started the tournament on a high note, after defeating Blue Earth 18-0 in five innings. Sleepy Eye put 10 runs on the board in the first inning alone which set the tone of the game. Alex Bruggeman started things off after hitting a two-RBI double which brought the lead to 5-0. Nathan Schroepfer added a two-RBI double of his own later in the inning and Sleepy Eye had the commanding lead.
     
    In the second, a two-RBI single from Matt Mielke added two runs to the total. In the fourth, Alex Sellner and Bruggeman each had RBIs while Jaden Mickelson added a big triple to put even more runs on the board. Mickelson ended the game with three runs scored and four RBI to lead at bat. Bruggeman and Schroepfer meanwhile, recorded three RBI apiece. Defensively, Schroepfer and Sean Salfer were the winning pitchers.
     
    Despite the well-executed first game of the tournament, Sleepy Eye fell to Hutchinson in the elimination bracket for the second game. The only run for Sleepy Eye came from Jared Beltz, who hit a double and a RBI in the game. Dylan Klein took the loss on the mound after recording four earned runs as Hutchinson won 7-1.
     
    Sleepy Eye ends its season with a winning record of 17-7.
