  • Finish the Fight. That was the theme for the 2014 Brown County Relay for Life event held Friday, July 25 at the New Ulm Fairgrounds.
Relay for Life raised $122,449 from teams, individuals, sponsors and in-kind donations. With these funds the American Cancer Society will take steps toward reaching that goal of finding a cure for cancer.
The success stories of those who have already accomplished the fight against cancer inspire those working to find a cure.
Over 100 survivors, sporting a purple t-shirt, said their name and how many years have passed since they beat cancer. More than 217 walkers on more than 20 teams walked from dusk until dawn to raise money.
A new event this year was a butterfly release sponsored by Citizens Bank. The butterfly symbolizes transformation and a new life. The Citizens Bank Team wore t-shirts with the words inscribed, “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.”
This year’s Honorary Chair and Honorary Caregiver were a husband and wife team, Dave and Deb Christian. Christian was diagnosed with cancer in 2012. He encouraged others dealing with cancer to seek support and tell their story, because every luminary around the track has a story behind it.
The number of cancer survivors continues to grow. Last year there were 107 survivors registered. This year there were 121.
