  • The Sleepy Eye Post 7 Legion baseball team ended its regular season on July 17 with two losses to Mankato National in a double header on the road.

Game one started slow for both teams, until Mankato opened up the bats in the third inning and notched three runs to take the lead. After scoring a fourth run in the fourth, Sleepy Eye was on the board after a RBI from Jon Kopacek brought in Brandon Helget in the bottom of the fourth, but it was to no avail as Sleepy Eye couldn’t get any more key hits and lost 4-1.

Sam Hirschboeck went 2-for-3 at bat, while Matt Berkner and Kopacek added the only other two hits for Sleepy Eye. On the mound, Kopacek had one strikeout and issued two walks on nine hits. Elliot Braun came in for the final two innings and recorded one strikeout, one walk and one hit.

Game two was a nail-biter from start to finish. Sleepy Eye kicked things off with a run in the first, only to allow Mankato to score two of its own in the first. The same exact situation took place in the third, and Mankato had a 4-2 lead. Sleepy Eye managed a run in the fourth, but had a rough sixth inning. Sleepy Eye gave up five runs as Mankato recorded multiple hits in the inning to take a 9-3 lead. However, Sleepy Eye rallied back in the top of the seventh and scored five runs to close the deficit, but it wasn’t enough as it lost 9-8.

Berkner went 2-for-5, scoring three runs and hitting a home run to lead Sleepy Eye. Behind him was Hirschboeck, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored one run. Lucas Heiderscheidt went 3-for-4 while Mike Hirsch went 2-for-4. B. Helget, Jay Helget, John Brandl and Jake Mielke each scored a run in the loss. Pitching wise, Mike Zinniel had one strikeout and two walks on nine hits and six runs. Marc Riederer recorded no strikeouts, two walks, three hits and three runs.

Sleepy Eye will play host for the 2014 Minnesota Sub-State 2 Division 1 American Legion Baseball Tournament this weekend. Sleepy Eye will take on Owatonna in its first game on July 24 at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, New Ulm Gold, Mankato American, Fairmont, Mankato National, and New Ulm Blue will be the other teams competing.
