  • The girls on the Sleepy Eye 18U fast-pitch softball team are state champions after defeating all five of their opponents at the Minnesota Sports Federation State Tournament last weekend in St. Cloud.

The 18 and under team, which features nine high school seniors, went 5-0 on the weekend to claim the Class-C championship. The first two games of the tournament were close ones for Sleepy Eye. Day one started with a 8-6 win over Fairmont, while the girls defeated the Greenbusch Gators 5-3 in game two. Game three deemed much easier, as the team won 8-1 over Ottertail Central to end the day on a high note.

On day two, Sleepy Eye faced the Greenbusch Gators for a second time, this time narrowly escaping with a 2-1 win to send the team to the championship game. The final game of the tournament was the most successful for Sleepy Eye, as the girls shut out Worthington 8-0 in five innings. Coach Lynnae Pelzel said she couldn’t be happier with the result.

“I am so proud of this team since I am ending my coaching career on the best note possible,” Pelzel said. “Katie and I have enjoyed coaching them for the last five years and knew the talent we had! They are so deserving of this and we are so proud. I want to say it was a total team effort! Every last one of them was influential in contributing to this championship!”
