  • The Sleepy Eye VFW Blue baseball team went 2-2 at the Sioux Falls Classic last weekend.
     
    On July 11, the team fell to Sioux Falls East 7-1, with Dylan Klein as the losing pitcher. Sleepy Eye recorded its second loss of the tournament the next day when they took on Sioux Falls East 16U. Sleepy Eye managed to score five runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 5-5, only to give two back in the bottom of the sixth to fall 7-5. Klein led at bat after going 3-for-4, with Jaden Mickelson as the losing pitcher.
     
    Sleepy Eye turned its game around for the rest of the tournament. It started with a 4-2 win over Watertown, S.D. with Sleepy Eye scoring three runs in the top of the first to grab the early momentum. The momentum continued for the rest of the game as Nathan Schroepfer pitched well on the mound to keep Watertown at bay. Lead batter was Jared Beltz, who went 2-for-4.
     
    On Sunday, Sleepy Eye dominated the Sioux Falls East 15U team with a 15-4 victory. Sleepy Eye scored 12 runs within the first two innings to avenge the earlier losses. Winning pitcher went to Sam Tessmer.
     
    The team finishes the regular season with a record of 14-7 and will open sub-districts on July 17 with a game against the host Hutchinson.
