  • The Sleepy Eye Post 7 Legion baseball team went 3-1 over the weekend at the Upper Midwest Tournament in New Ulm.

  • The Sleepy Eye Post 7 Legion baseball team went 3-1 over the weekend at the Upper Midwest Tournament in New Ulm.
     
    On July 4, Sleepy Eye kicked the tournament off with an exciting 8-7 win over Bloomington Gold.
     
    Bloomington opened up its bats right away in the first, hitting multiple base hits and RBIs to take a 4-0 lead along with a huge momentum boost. After the lead was brought to 5-0 in the fourth, Sleepy Eye scored its first runs of the game to cut the deficit to three. Bloomington made it 6-2 after the top of the sixth, but Sleepy Eye finally opened up at bat in the bottom sixth to score four runs to tie the game. Sam Hirschboeck and Jon Kopacek led at bat in the inning.
     
    In the eighth, Bloomington scored a clutch run to take a 7-6 lead, but Sleepy Eye responded big with two runs of its own in the bottom eighth to take the game.
     
    Hirschboeck led after going 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one double and two RBI. Kopacek followed after going 4-for-4 with two runs, one double and one RBI. Matt Berkner hit a two-RBI triple in the game, while Mike Zinniel had a two-RBI hit as well. Defensively, Kopacek led after throwing five strikeouts, three walks on 12 hits.
     
    Sleepy Eye had no time to rest after the close game as it took on Creighton NE right afterward. Creighton showed how well of a hitting team it is after opening up at the plate and scoring eight runs after the first two innings. Meanwhile, Sleepy Eye’s only runs of the game came in the first after Brandon Helget and Hirschboeck each hit a RBI to bring in Berkner and David Surprenant.
     
    Mike Hirsch and Surprenant led on the mound, throwing a combined five strikeouts, six walks on 10 hits in the 12-2 loss.
     
    On July 5, Sleepy Eye took on New Ulm Blue where it won 3-2.
     
    It was a battle of the pitchers as Zinniel threw eight strikeouts on eight hits to keep New Ulm at bay. However, New Ulm took a 2-0 lead after the second inning to put the pressure on Sleepy Eye. Sleepy Eye was able to muster up three runs of its own in the next inning which would hold for the rest of the game. Helget had the only two RBIs in the game, hitting a triple along with two other hits and scoring one run on his own. Berkner and Surprenant had the other two runs. Berkner and Hirsch combined for five hits in the win.

    A couple hours later, Sleepy Eye took on Rosetown where a hitting fiesta took place. Sleepy Eye had 19 hits while Rosetown had 18. Sleepy Eye took a 6-0 lead after the first two innings and it jumped to a 9-2 lead after the third. Rosetown snuck back into the game with three straight runs in the middle innings. It wasn’t enough however, as Sleepy Eye scored six more in the final two innings to take their final game of the tournament 15-10.
     
    Jake Mielke pitched for Sleepy Eye, throwing just one strikeout and three walks in the game. At bat, Helget led going 3-for-4 with two runs, one double and four RBI. Surprenant was behind him after going 3-for-3 with two runs, two doubles and three RBI. Hirschboeck had two hits, one run and three RBI as well. Meanwhile, Berkner went 2-for-5 scoring four runs. Jay Helget and Jared Rothmeier each added two runs as well.
