  • The Sleepy Eye ASA 18U softball team defeated the Sleepy Eye ASA 16U team 2-1 on July 8 at Kiefer Park in eight innings.

A pitching duel broke out early as no runs were scored in the first two innings. The first big opportunity came for the 18U team in the third inning, when hits from Laura Pelzel and Emily Schumacher allowed Kaitlin Christensen to hit a RBI to bring in the first run of the game.

Meanwhile, the 16U team was struggling to get anything going offensively as Pelzel threw well on the mound. However, 16U tied the game at one in the fifth with a big double to right field from Natalie Stevens. The double turned into a run after a throwing error was made from the 18U team.

In the seventh, both teams had a close chance of ending the game. A hit from Carly Jensen plus a sacrifice bunt sent Jensen to third, but the 16U team got the third out before any run was scored. The same exact situation happed in the next half inning, but the 18U team got the outs needed to send the game into extra innings.

In the eighth, a walk-off RBI was hit from Jordyn Domeier to give the 18U team the 2-1 victory. Next home game for the 18U team will be next Tuesday at Kiefer Park.
