Sleepy Eye’s Post 7 Legion recently added two wins to its record.

On June 27, Sleepy Eye hosted Fairmont and won 2-1. It was a pitching dual from the start, but Sleepy Eye scored its first run in the third to take the lead. Fairmont was able to tie it in the top fifth, but another run scored from Sleepy Eye in the bottom fifth was enough to win.

Matt Berkner and Marc Riederer had two hits apiece to lead the team offensively. Jay Helget and Riederer scored the two runs. Meanwhile, Fairmont was held back by David Surprenant, who threw six strikeouts, five walks on two hits in the win.

On June 30, the team traveled to New Ulm to take on New Ulm Blue. Sleepy Eye jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first, and added to their total with three more runs in the third and another in the fifth to take a commanding 5-0 lead. New Ulm however, got its bats going in the sixth and scored two runs but it wasn’t enough as Sleepy Eye went on to win 5-2.

Surprenant led at the plate going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Meanwhile, Brandon Helget went 1-for-3 with one run and two RBI. Sam Hirschboeck and Jon Kopacek each added a RBI as well. Defensively, Mike Hirsch and Elliot Braun threw a combined seven strikeouts to keep New Ulm at bay.

This weekend the team will play in the Upper Midwest Tournament, with its first two games on June 4 against Bloomington and Creighton.
