  • In a day or so, people will be heading out for a long holiday weekend. This year’s Independence Day there is plenty to do in Sleepy Eye.
Most businesses on Friday, July 4th will be closed in observance of the holiday and our office is no exception. Even though the office is closed, we will have our reporter out covering the events taking place for next week’s Herald-Dispatch.
Thursday evening the street dance will kick off the holiday at the Railway Bar & Grill. Come by and check out the music by the Heiderscheidt band.
Friday will start at Allison Park with the burger feed sponsored by Sleepy Eye Eagles with more music for your listening pleasure.
Veteran’s Park dedication will begin at 7 p.m. with the Honor Guard marching from the Servicemen’s Club to Veteran’s Park. They will also perform a flag retiring ceremony as well. Anyone who has a tattered American Flag can bring it to Veteran’s Park and have it properly disposed of and you can also order new flags as well.
Before dusk make your way to Allison Park again for the fireworks display that will take place over Sleepy Eye Lake. This event is also sponsored by the Sleepy Eye Eagles Club. Bring blankets, lawn chairs and bug spray and some cash to throw in the hat to help support this event.
The most important reason for this weekend is our freedoms. Please remember to thank our Veterans who have served and are serving our great nation.
Be wise and be safe this long holiday weekend!
Thought for the week: Anyone can wave a flag. The real patriot lives his patriotism in everything he does. – John Devine.
