  • Sleepy Eye Community Theatre (SECT) is pleased to bring the production of “Church Basement Ladies” to the stage at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Auditorium July 10-13.
“Sleepy Eye Community Theatre is so excited to be producing “Church Basement Ladies,” said Sandy Brinkman, director of the show. “The cast, set builders, costumers and crew are a very dedicated and hard working group. For those of you familiar with “Church Basement Ladies,” we promise you those same fun and crazy women of the church basement. For those new and unfamiliar to the show, we encourage you to come and see it.”
“Church Basement Ladies” is a musical comedy celebrating the church kitchen and the women who work there. From the elderly matriarch of the kitchen to the young bride-to-be learning the proper order of things, the play reveals four distinct characters and their relationships as they organize food and solve the problems of a rural Minnesota church.
They stave off potential diasters, share and debate recipes, instruct the young, and keep the pastor on course while thoroughly enjoying and tolerating each other.
The play is inspired by the books of Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson including the best seller “Growing Up Lutheran,” written by Jim Stowell and Jessica Zuehlke. Music and lyrics are by Drew Jansen.
The cast of “Church Basement Ladies” includes: Randy Armbruster as Pastor E. L. Gunderson; Gwen Ruff as Mrs. Lars (Vivian) Snustad; Dana Miller as Mrs. Gilmer (Mavis) Gilmerson; Janet Holm as Mrs. Elroy (Karin) Engelson and Kristina Iwan as Miss Signe Engelson.
The play is directed by Sandy Brinkman. Music directors include Gerry and Carol Larson. Choreographer is Gary Sassenberg. Set designer and prop chair is Mary Van Roekel and costume designer is Pam Krzmarzick.
