  • Post 7 Legion took on Mankato American in two close games on June 23 at Franklin Rogers in Mankato.

The first game ended up a low scoring, pitcher’s duel as Jon Kopacek started on the mound for Sleepy Eye and pitched a great game all the way through.

Matt Berkner hit a triple as the first batter for Sleepy Eye and David Surprenant had a RBI single to drive him in for an early 1-0 lead. A later double from Sam Hirschboeck would drive in Surprenant.

Sleepy Eye would have a 2-0 lead to start this low scoring game. Mankato was unable to respond until the third inning with two runs to tie the game 2-2.

Both pitchers got in a groove and it looked as though the first team to score one more run would win the game. We had to wait until the bottom of the eighth inning before that run would come.

The bottom of the lineup came up big for Sleepy Eye in the bottom of the seventh with hits from Elliot Braun and Jay Helget but a good pick-off move from the pitcher would get him out of the inning.

Brandon Helget would hit a double in the top of the first inning but Sleepy Eye wouldn’t be able to drive him in.

Still tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, Mankato would get two big hits to put runners on base. A groundball with one out would score the winning run for Mankato in a 3-2 victory.

The second game would be another close one but more runs would be scored.

Mankato couldn’t get anything started in the top of the first and Sleepy Eye would strike first.

David Suprenant gets a hit and he is driven in by Hirschboeck to take an early 1-0 lead. Sleepy Eye carried the lead into the third inning. Mankato scored three runs in the top of the third to make it a 3-1 game.

Sleepy Eye would answer with a run of their own. Matt Berkner would get on base on a hit and Brandon Helget hits a RBI double to cut the lead to 3-2. That’s all Sleepy Eye was able to score in the third.

Mankato scored two more runs in the top of the fourth to open up a 5-2 lead.

Sleepy Eye scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on hits from Surprenant and Brandon Helget. Jon Kopacek and Mike Zinniel came up big and scored runs.

Mankato scored two more runs in the sixth inning to make the score 7-4.

In the seventh inning Sleepy Eye came alive with an early double from Sam Hirschboeck. Mike Zinniel would have a RBI single to cut the lead down to two. Jay Helget recorded another RBI for Sleepy Eye but they fall just short losing 7-6.
