  • The Sleepy Eye Police Department wishes to inform the public that there have been reports of fake $100 bills being used in some surrounding communities.

According to Police Chief Matt Andres, currency test pens will not show they are counterfeit because the bills appear to be printed on $1 bill paper.

“The only way to tell if they are counterfeit is to look at the gold 100 in the right corner. On a real $100 bill, that part will turn slightly different colors when tilted. Also, the fake $100’s show the watermark at all times,” Andres warned.

The Sleepy Eye Police Department encourages residents to learn more about detecting counterfeit bills by visiting www.secretservice.gov/money_detect.shtml.

“Knowing how to detect counterfeit bills is a valuable asset for everyone who deals with money. Having counterfeit bills in your possession or using them is illegal if the intent is to defraud someone,” Andres noted.

Counterfeit bills are not legal currency and therefore have no value, he added.

“If you accept counterfeit bills unknowingly you have received nothing of any monetary value, you may be out that money you were owed,” Andres said. “Once the counterfeit bills have been reported to a police agency or the Secret Service the counterfeit bills will be seized and you will not be compensated for the counterfeit bills from the police agency, business or any bank. Ultimately it is the individual’s responsibility to accept only legal currency.”

Anyone receiving a payment in cash from an unknown person, for example a craigslist sale, is advised to accept the money at their bank so the money can be put into their account immediately allowing the bank to verify the validity of the bills.

The SEPD  encourages everyone to examine any bills they receive and notify the Sleepy Eye Police Department at 507-794-3711 if they suspect counterfeit bills have been passed to them.
