  • The Searles Bullheads 35-and-over men’s amateur baseball team started its season on May 18.

The Bullheads feature athletes from around the area, and recently added Sleepy Eye’s Cory Haala to its roster. On May 18, the team opened their season witha 14-7 win over the Prior Lake Pacers. The Bullheads scored four runs in the first inning, and five more in the third to build an early 10-1 lead.

Lead-off hitter Craig Schmitz went 4-for-5 at bat with a double and a RBI. Doug Ekstrom was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Meanwhile, Scott Rummel picked up the win for the Bullheads. Rummel, Schmitz, Brad Mathiowetz, and Haala combined for a total of six strikeouts and five walks. John Buelow had two of the Pacers seven hits, including a solo home run in the 2nd inning.

On May 31, Searles lost its home opener to the Welcome Southwest Outlaws by a score of 3-2. Both teams played good defense as the game was scoreless in the first three innings.

In the top of the fourth, the Outlaws scored the first run of the game after two runners were hit at the plate, followed by a pair of singles. The Bullheads meanwhile, came right back with a run in the bottom half of the fourth after Kurt Thorson delivered a single to center field to score Ekstrom, who hit a single earlier in the inning.
In the bottom fifth, Searles took its first lead with a lead off home run from Todd Hulke. The 2-1 lead was short lived as the Outlaws responded with a solo home run of their own to tie the game 2-2. In the seventh, Welcome got a lead-off double and the runner eventually scored on a wild pitch to take the game.

The Bullheads are now 1-1 on the season and will be in LeCenter on June 6 for their next game. The next home game will be on June 8, when they host Northfield at 2 p.m.
