Work continues with Casey’s General Store as they finalize their plans for their new store on the Snow Addition. We also have a letter of intent from another company, and hope to go public with that information in the next couple of weeks.
The April EDA Board meeting began with a presentation from Mark Thomas Company on their business expansion project. The EDA will look to assist them as they complete their project. Veteran’s Park—The state and city flag poles and flags will be installed in the next couple of days. Work is currently being done on the donor recognition displays. The final work on the landscaping—rocks, plastic installation, as well as the drip system to the plants, will be completed by Sleepy Eye Sprinkling in the next couple of weeks. The installation of the last two granite benches and the bronze name plates on the wall will be done by Borth Memorials also as soon as the weather cooperates.

A sign is going to be added to the existing one right now advertising “residential lots” available, as well as the commercial/industrial lots. Road work will begin this spring on 12th Avenue, Maple and Walnut Street, all within that development.
Updated information was shared regarding the Eagles Orchid Inn and their work with the Small Business Development Center. An audit was discussed and the EDA will seek some legal advice regarding this possibility. There is continued activity with EDA to work cooperatively toward successful accomplishments for the Eagles organization.
The new EDA Sign/Awning Program information was distributed to the downtown business or building owners. Some interest has been shown and I will be doing some follow-up on the program in the next weeks.
The EDA Board reviewed proposal information from three different firms for doing a housing study here in Sleepy Eye. They have decided to go with Maxfield Research Inc., and hope to get the project started within the next couple of weeks.
I will begin visiting with the local businesses about the “Business Retention & Expansion” surveys that I will be presenting to businesses. The purpose of the survey is to inform the EDA about our local businesses and their strengths and challenges, and to have them offer input on what the EDA might be able to do to improve and update economic development here in town.
