  • Last weekend I participated in the third annual Gorilla 5K Run in North Mankato. Everyone who registered was given a full gorilla suit to wear during the race, and the lead-off runners wore banana suits. No, I’m not making this up.

Obviously it wasn’t a legit 5K. It was more of a fun, hilarious get-together of monkey mayhem, all for a good cause. The proceeds went to The Miracle League of North Mankato, which helps children with disabilities participate in sports such as baseball and softball leagues. Gorilla suits, delicious food and drinks, a good cause, how could I say no?

Over 1,500 gorillas participated in the event. In fact, we ended up breaking the Guinness World Record for the “Largest gathering of people dressed as gorillas.” I can now say I-(and a bunch of gorillas) hold a Guinness World Record. Pretty awesome.

Even though it wasn’t a real 5K, I could still hear the “Chariots of Fire” theme song play in my head when I crossed the finish line. I’ve never actually enjoyed running, but it has grown on me. Running outdoors is a great way to get some fresh air, explore and connect with nature. It’s also really beneficial to your health; if you ever want to lose some weight, running will help.

There’s somewhat of a running culture around the area, which is cool. There seems to be more and more 5K running events, so they must be becoming more popular. I can definitely see myself entering into more abnormal 5K runs. I was pretty stoked about Dungeon’s Gym Zombie Run last October, but I wasn’t able to go.

This Saturday, the ninth annual Sleepy Eye Medical Center 5K run/walk for health will take place at Allison Park. Another one coming up is the Kaylie Hogue and Tyler Hadley 5K Rainbow Color Run on June 7 in Sleepy Eye. So even if you’re not a runner, come out and support these great 5K events!
