Vernon "Vern" A. Hinrichs, age 85, of Sleepy Eye, died on Monday, May 5, 2014, at his home.

Vernon "Vern" A. Hinrichs, age 85, of Sleepy Eye, died on Monday, May 5, 2014, at his home. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye and will continue on Friday at the church for one hour prior to the service. Service will be held at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. The clergy will be Pastor Chris Cordes. Interment will be at the Home Cemetery, in Sleepy Eye with military honors by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. Vernon Adolph Hinrichs was born on May 22, 1928 in Lidgerwood, N.D. to Adolph and Mabel (Walter) Hinrichs. He attended Dexter #1 Country School through eighth grade and then attended Lidgerwood Public School. In 1947, Vern worked for Lake Electric in Devils Lake, N.D. He married Betty Lou Bogstie on July 28, 1950 in Breckenridge. Vern served in the US Army with the 35th RCT, Regimental Combat Team as Sergeant in Korea for two years where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. After his honorable discharge in 1953, Vern and Betty moved to Sleepy Eye where Vern worked for Brown County REA as a lineman until retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, the DAV, Life member of the VFW and past Commander of the American Legion and also held other offices. Vern enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling and traveling, spending seven winters in Arizona. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Vern is survived by his wife, Betty of Sleepy Eye; daughters, Beverly (Donald) Mickelson of Sleepy Eye, Sharon (Paul) Bergling of Butterfield; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Brad) Sellner, Heather (Chad) Loeschke, Ryan Mickelson and special friend Kyle, Brian (Heidi) Bergling and Eryn Bergling; eight great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mae Hinrichs of Lidgerwood and Irene Klemetsrude of Cottage Grove; and special neighbor and friends Larry (Carrie) Hansen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bernard and Harley; and sister, Norma Lyons.
